Start here

The days most Denmark trips get built around.

Harbour boats, city bikes, an open smørrebrød table, a castle up the coast, wooden giants hidden in the woods and one very large LEGO park. Pick those first and fit the rest around them.

On the water

Copenhagen makes more sense from the canal.

The old naval channels run past the warehouses of Christianshavn, the black diamond library and the opera house, and every boat ducks under bridges low enough to make people sit down. The covered ones keep going in the rain; the small electric boats carry a dozen people and a hot drink.

Only here

Denmark keeps a freetown, six wooden giants and lunch on one slice of rye.

Plenty of European capitals do palaces and cathedrals. These three are Danish and nowhere else.

Since 1971

The Freetown

Christiania took over an abandoned naval barracks on Christianshavn in 1971 and has argued with the Danish state ever since. Around a thousand people live behind the gate, in self-built houses strung along the old ramparts and the lake. Guides walk you through the workshops, the music venues and the politics; cameras are fine everywhere except Pusher Street, a rule the neighbourhood enforces itself.

Built from scrap

The Wooden Giants

Thomas Dambo built six giants out of pallets and old fence boards and hid them in the woodland ring around Copenhagen, at Hvidovre, Rødovre and Vallensbæk. Finding all six is a full day by bike or car, with a written clue for each. South of the city the same idea goes vertical: a spiral tower that walks you up over the treetops of a Zealand forest.

Lunch, formalised

The Smørrebrød Table

Smørrebrød is one slice of dense rye carrying more than looks reasonable: pickled herring under raw onion, roast pork with red cabbage, or a shrimp tower that arrives with half a lemon. Lunch is the meal Danes take seriously, snaps included. The tasting walks add the bakery counters, where the pastry the rest of the world calls Danish is simply wienerbrød.

Two wheels

Copenhagen gave the world the cycle lane. Use it.

There are more bikes than people here, the lanes have their own traffic lights, and there is no hill worth the name. A guided three-hour ride takes in the harbour, the palace quarter and Nørrebro in the time a walking tour needs for the old streets alone.

North of the city

Hamlet’s castle is forty minutes up the coast.

Kronborg stands at the narrowest point of the Øresund at Helsingør, close enough to Sweden to count the roofs on the far side. Frederiksborg keeps its moat and its chapel, Roskilde keeps the royal tombs and five salvaged Viking ships, and one day trip usually takes in two of the three.

Plan ahead

Book these before you leave for Denmark.

Most of Copenhagen can be arranged the night before from your hotel. These cannot — they run on dated tickets, seasonal opening and a departure board nobody in your party controls.

  1. 011-Day Ticket to LEGOLAND® with All Rides AccessDated tickets, and the park closes for the winter — check the calendar before anyone hears the word LEGO.
  2. 02Round-Trip to Møns Klint and Forest TowerA whole day south of the city, seats limited per departure. It will not squeeze into a spare afternoon.
  3. 03The Copenhagen Culinary Experience Food TourTen or twelve people to a table, one sitting at a time. Summer dates go first.
  4. 04Hamlet and Sweden Tour – Two Countries in one day !Two countries in a day across the Øresund — the crossing timetable sets the departure, not you.
Grey day

When the rain comes in off the Øresund, go indoors in Copenhagen.

A wet day here is not a lost one. The crown jewels sit in a cellar under Rosenborg, the National Museum runs to a full afternoon, Carlsberg’s old brewery is entirely under a roof, and a pastry class ends with something warm in your hands.
